This was mentioned to us by a few realtors during our recent visit when we asked about snakes. How much of a problem are venomous snakes and how often are they seen? Do most people worry on a regular basis about their kids getting bitten?

Thanks!

Seriously though I have never seen a poisonous snake since I moved to Houston. If you are worried about snakes get a cat for your yard, they will keep them away.

I've never seen a snake in Sugar Land but other than walking on busy neighborhood trails, I'm not much of an outdoors person. I'm putting "Snake Away" out just to be safe.

Occasionally you can come across a copperhead and as the previous poster mentioned, a female cat is great for that! More grass snakes then anything but they are all yucky! Don't worry about kids unnecessarily, kids should wear shoes if they are going to the bayou or walking through tall grass, just common sense type stuff. There are not snakes "everywhere". You may never see one at all.

******

Crazy ants, I can understand. But snakes in the Bayou City? Not very likely.

I don't think cobras are even native to the US.

We're at the east/west US crossroads where you can potentially find all 4 poisonous native types: cottonmouth, rattler, copperhead & coral. I've only seen one copperhead but several small, non-poisonous types.

Is there really such a thing as snake away? We are all allergic to cats unfortunately!
I'm glad to hear that they aren't as common as some of the realtors led me to believe. One mentioned that gators are quite common too - anywhere there is water? I just don't want to be afraid to let my kids play in the yard.

Yeah there's such thing. Never used it. Seen alligators while camping in Conroe several years ago but never in town nor in the suburbs. That's not to say they don't exist, but they are shy animals that typically stay far away from people.

If you have a bunch of cobras in your yard like I do then they will scare away the gators.
