Hi. My wife and I (and our 2 year old son) are considering relocating from Western New York to either Philly or Houston. I've visted both, but visiting and living are two different things. So I'd appreciate some help in comparing the two cities to decide which is best for us.

My wife and I are in our early to mid 30's. We're looking for a city that has a vibrant (busy) lifestyle, lots of people walking, a good cultural scene with decent theaters and such, and a welcoming environment for European immigrants with non-native English. Of course there need to be some great schools, good healthcare, and as much safety as can reasonably be expected of a large city.

So basically we want it all. Now which of the two is going to come closest to having it all?

I'm originally from Philadelphia but now live in Houston. In terms of raising a family close to amenties offered by these cities - I would have to recommend Houston. Philadelphia is an interesting place with lots going on but its pretty unsafe (my impression from family still there). I have lived in the Bellaire section of Houston for 3 years - its WONDERFUL for families. Close to zoo, parks, world class museums. Lots of kid-orientated activities. Plus I think Houston is more international frindly than Philadelphia. Houston is surprisingly, happily diverse - given the employment draws of world class medical center and oil and gas industry. (my mother in law runs a german language school - being a european transplant here herself) The cultural scene is also great and accessible - free theatre at Miller Outdoor theatre, etc.
althoughm houston is NOT pedestrian friendly, philadelphia would win for compactness. i have to admit, we're moving to DC and I am definitely looking forward to having the metro. Also, Houston schools dont have the best reputation - the private schools are pretty affordable. Plus you cant beat cost of living here - whereas I believe Philadelphia has one of the highest tax burdens in the US. The thing you may miss most from NY is the scenery and weather - there is really is just hot and hotter down here - forget about fall.
Overall both are great cities but I would give a ringing endorsement to Houston
