I am 52 and have lived either IN Houston or within 2 hours of Houston for 35 of those 52 years.

So it certainly feels like home....lots of good things as mentioned.

The wife and I are looking at southwest Virginia as a retirement spot.

The things I don't like about H-town and environs??
  • Not having a 4-seasons climate
  • Steamy heat that does not even let up after dark and results in doing everything in air conditioning and means driving to do anything
  • Sprawl and minimal consideration to alternate forms of transportation
  • Did I mention the steamy heat that does not even let up after dark?

Things that would almost lead me to consider staying here??
  • Wearing t-shirt and shorts in February (not all month long, of course)
  • Roots and relationships here
  • Affordable housing
  • Ninfa's restaurant - the original on Navigation, of course

Default Oh come on, be serious

"in many ways Houston may be an easier place to live if you're middle/lower-middle income. But for those who can afford the higher cost of living in New England it is simply head and shoulders a better place to live."

Ha ha ha ha ha, well you've certainly taken on the local Boston arrogance. :-) Cute. Boston is certainly a nice city, my wife is from there and I lived there for a few years. Can be a nice town. Personally, I hate it. The traffic is the worst, you pay 3 times the fair price for any housing and then there is the weather. :-) I think probably the most objectionable part of the culture there is the arrogance that you displayed so well here. My wife and I both have Ph.D.s and were disgusted by the way our colleagues looked down on people and the kind of tacky low-class comments.

I guess proof that education and income :-) say little about class.

but Boston is not what you Bostonians think it is.

:-) Well if you're paying such prices and living such a low quality of life, you have to convince yourself of something. :-) Hence the South New England arrogance. Lived there for years, what a hell hole. Even if you have enough money to be comfortable which I fortunately did, it's still a low quality of life.

I think this is what is so misleading (in some ways) about the city of Houston. The city has annexed land as far as Oklahoma it seems, so for the newcomer who hasn't done their research, they are blindsided when they have a Houston, Texas mailing address but the physical address is Tulsa, Oklahoma!

I am in NW Houston and not happy, can you tell?

Bottom line : gotta do your research.
