According to those numbers, Pearland is quite a bit more expensive than Clear Lake for insurance.

Or DLJ has some credit problems.

A home still builds equity and $150k buys a nice home in Pearland depending on where and how many bedrooms. If you compare a home to renting, you are usually adding a yard, a garage and more privacy. There are alot of homes available at good prices. I'm a realtor and I see them all of the time. My first home (albeit) 15years ago was $62000, I fixed it up and sold it in 2 years for $82000 and bought my 2nd home at $82,000, I rented that out for 4 years at $1200 per month and during that time I bought my current home for $165k that's now worth $230k based on current comps after 5 years. I sold my $82000 home for $132000 last year. SUMMARY: buying a home, even a small one that is not your dream home can lead you to your dream home faster than renting. If I had rented all that equity would have been spent.
