Hello,
My girlfriend and I are trying to move out of Alaska... we HATE it here. Its too cold, summers are too short, and there is absolutely NOTHING to do besides drink inside. We are looking for an area that is: low in crime, near the airport, schools, and as close to the ocean as possible. She is a nursing student and I am a video/film/media production major. We are both in our early 20's and are looking for a place that fits us. We were looking at Florida, but that place is so overrun with crime, that we decided to venture across the gulf. Since we are both students, our budget is around $800/month. If anyone could offer any info, that will get us out of here, you would be our savior. Thanks for reading

Low in crime, somewhat near Hobby airport, near the water, right by a large upperclassman U of H branch, and with things for 20-somethings to actually do... sounds like the Clear Lake area may work. Either in Houston proper or perhaps one of the small resort towns by the lake. You can get a decent 2 bedroom for $800. Better if you had $900, though.

Agree with TStone - Clear Lake might fit the bill for you guys. Video/Film Producer - you might want to check out Austin as well - although not on a coast might be a great place for someone in your line of work.

League City/Clear Lake area would be a great fit. We are minutes from the water and tourism. Downtown Houston is about 30/45 minutes away depending on traffic. There would probably be jobs in that area for someone in your profession. As for your girlfriend the Island has UTMB, Clear Lake has a medical center that is growing every month and Downtown has some of the most world renound hospitals around. We are close to the nightlife as well Kemah Boardwalk is an AWESOME area. I agree that 900 budget would find you a nicer place but 800 is workable number too! Good luck in your search.

I would agree on the ClearLake area...expand that to Kemah, Seabrook. If your interested in Galveston...it is mid-way between Houston and Galveston. We live on Seabrook Island and love it. Very laid back...flip-flop kind of atmosphere and right on the water...but close to anything you could possibly want. Good Luck with your move!

Just chiming in bc I am laughing... I moved from Fairbanks last year and am heading to Houston in August!

1- Sales Tax! TX is fine but I am in LA right now and to register my vehicle, they want you to pay sales tax on the whole thing. Be sure to renew in AK.

2- Broken windshields are apparently illegal (???) I got stopped.

Good Luck!

We moved from Ca. We could register 4 highend cars in Texas for less than the cost of one of them in Ca.!
Broken windshields, no matter what state you are in, are illegal if it impedes your view in any way. Depends on how picky the officer wants to get.
