I'm going to try and get a position at the HSID's Main Administration Complex. It appears to be located at 4400 West 18th Street, Houston, TX 77092.

Can anyone recommend a 2 bed/2 bath apartment for $1,000 or less within 15-20 minutes of this location? I hate commuting and have in the past moved to within walking distance to a job.

What areas are close that will be reasonably walkable and have things to see and do (shops, bookstores, restaurants etc)?

I'm planning to move down at the end of the month with my girlfriend and and old friend. The gf and I will move into temporary housing. We'll probably try to acclimate to the weather and city before getting employment and a place.

Thanks in advance.

Consider this a redo thread.

If you find a 2/2 for $1k or less in a walkable area it probably won't be a building/compex you'd want to live in. Best bet is to look in the Heights, but you won't be able to walk to work from there, and you'll probably spend over $1k for something decent.

The HISD admin building is surrounded by industrial buildings and freeways....not conducive to walking to work.

I literally found more than 200 properties within 10 miles from the center of the zip code for the building for less than a $1k. I was hoping someone could recommend a few.

I knew I would never be able to walk to work. I looked the building up on Google Maps before posting this thread. What I'm looking for is an apartment in an area within a 15-20 minute drive from the building. Hopefully that area would have things (coffee shops, book stores, bike trails, parks) within walking or a very short driving distance.

Before I had an idea where I was looking to work I was strictly thinking inside the Loop. With that building being outside...it's opened up the possibility of living outside. At the same time I'm thinking living inside the and driving the opposite way of other commuters might be a possibility as well.

Just so you know....I'm not scared of "the hood" or whatever. If City Data is too believed I live in a war zone right now. So a little petty crime or lower income people do not bother me. That said I am on the straight and narrow so HIGH crime areas are definitely not what I'm looking for.

I will give the Heights a closer looks. Thanks.....

I'm sure you did, but I'm also fairly sure none of them were in walkable areas with nice little places to get books and coffee. Very few parts of Houston are walkable, espescially in the vicinity of HISD's admin building.

So are you looking for recommendations on temporary housing such as a hotel/motel type thing? I am in the locating business and in order to go into a lease at any area complex that I am aware of you have to be gainfully employed. They generally are looking for a transfer letter or last paycheck stub. So just trying to clarify and I will try to advise.

I am looking for a 2bd/2ba apartment to lease. There are a ton out there. I have done a lot of research online but I was hoping for recommendations from someone "on the ground". I'll of course be looking once I get there.

I already have a few possibilities for the temp lodging I'll use while acclimating to the weather and taking extended time off for the first time in over seven years.

Look in The Heights around W. 19th or 20th, along Yale and Heights Blvd, Studewood, and/or near 11th or Sixth Street (White Oak). You won't be within walking distance to your job, but you'll be within walking distance of cafes, boutiques, restaurants, etc. and work will only be a short drive/bus ride away.

There is an apartment in the $1000 range right across the highway right next to the Applebee's you might want to check out.

Yes, Heights would be a very easy commute and you wouldn't even have to get on the freeway. MapQuest says 3.5 miles and 9 minutes.

It sounds like a much better option for the type of lifestyle you are describing than one of the apartment complexes along the freeway.

I am not "in the know" on apartment options/costs in the Heights, however, so hopefully you will continue to get some help here!

Try zip code 77008.

I saw a 2 bed/2.5 bath condo on realtor.com on Rutland Street for $1,400 so you ought to be able to find something cool. Good luck!
