For anyone that is single with children or know someone who is,I was wondering if your a single parent of an elementary school age child(ren) who watches the childwhen school is not in session or have early dismissal or even days off. I'm a single parent with no family in houston and have very few friends. Are there any programs out there that cater to people in my situation. This issue has been on my mind. I know eventually I will make friends but I cant count on that right now. Im not sure were to find this information.

Start with your school. Some of them offer in-house after-school programs on-campus, others contract with outside providers to... uh... provide after-school programs on their campuses, while others keep a list of nearby after-care providers. I think the YMCA has a "drop-in" program for sick days, and they also operate a winter break camp. If you've got a corporate job, some of them offer childcare services to employees. I think I once read about one of the hospitals offering a "drop-in" program for sick days for kids' employees so parents wouldn't have to miss work. Also, don't underestimate the power of befriending other single parents, or even coupled parents, when you get here. They will be eager and useful for rideshares, sleepovers on date nights, etc. Be creative. Set up a babysitting barter where you trade time instead of money, for example. You can also check this website for providers near your home or work location. http://www.dfps.state.tx.us/Child_Ca...rchDayCare.asp
