Moving to Texas and want to know if The Woodlands is more than just a name? What makes this area more expensive than a lot of other places surrounding it? Is it worth the money? Does it offer more?

I think you can have a same or even better quality of life in Montgomery for less money. That is if you work up there. It's not qualityof life anywhere up there if one of you works anywhere inside 610.

There're so many master planned communities in the Metro, and great neighborhoods in Houston. Pick one close to work and get on with life.

It really depends on what you want in a community. If you like heavily wooded areas with a wide variety of tree species then the woodlands is great. In fact my favorite communities are Kingwood and The Woodlands.

The most important thing that I am looking for is a great family atmosphere and lots for kids to do.

I guess it's a trade off. If you like very pretty heavily treed surroundings with jobs and stores close by then you have to decide if paying the extra taxes for that privlege is worth it. Then there is the "clout address" thing. Poeple like to say they are from the Woodlands. It makes them feel good.

If one wants to argue this then I only point towards Realtor listings. You will have listings for Woodlands but when you click on it it might say Spring - or live close to Woodlands without the taxes. It's not right but they get away with it.

Woodlands is beautiful...no doubt about it. But like a previous poster said, Montgomery offers a different kind of beauty without the traffic and high taxes.

I think The Woodlands is unique and beatifull. We ended up buying just outside The Woodlands in Magnolia because we wanted a larger lot (1 acre).

Where do you plan to WORK? The Woodlands is one HECK of a drive into Houston. 35 miles one-way and don't think for a moment that 35 miles = 35 minutes... normally 45-55 in the mornings.

As for the area itself, The Woodlands is gorgeous. It's my absolute favorite part of the Houston metro area. Gorgeous master-planned area with trees all over the place. It's illegal to cut one down without a permit! I love that. It's a clean, safe area for kids with tons to do. It's full of families with kids of all ages. You will love it. But, please consider where your job(s) will be. You don't want to spend half your life driving. On the other hand, many corporations are relocating to The Woodlands so you can live AND work there. If you can live AND work there, it's basically as close to paradise as you can get for the money. Not all parts of The Woodlands are expensive. They have been building houses there since the 1970's and there are homes in all prices ranges. Just be smart when utilizing the MLS searches, you can find homes from under 100k if that's your need. It's cheaper in The Woodlands than it is in First Colony or Cinco Ranch and it's nicer (IMO). For instance, First Colony is no more than 5 miles from many questionable parts of Houston and Missouri City... that means "questionable" characters can be found shopping and roaming about in First Colony. The Woodlands is far enough out to avoid most of that.... it's just too far for them to go. They usually don't get past Spring (I lived in Spring 7.5 years, so I know this pretty well.... our Spring Wal-Mart is loaded with people who drove in from Houston... The Woodlands Wal-Mart is like shopping in a fancy Beverly Hills Wal-Mart... quiet, clean, nice).

To me, if you can bear the drive to work, The Woodlands is "the place" in the Houston area.

Yes and I never cared about saying where I was from.
