I am in search of an upscale or upper middle class neighborhood with a predominately African American population.

Do you mean upscale areas that are higly populated with African Americans as opposed to other races? Because there aren't any neighborhoods that I know of that only allow African Americans.

Are you looking for something close-in or in the suburbs?

I would prefer to live intown. We are applying to 5 different schools and they are all in the loop or just slightly outside of it.

Riverside Terrace near U of H. There are many young professional African Americans moving in and renovating the homes. It is is a great location and has been experiencing appreciation. You'll probably have a white or Hispanic neighbor or two, though
Also check out MacGregor. Some of the city's AA civic leaders reside here. I will be honest with you, once you get into the central areas, the neighborhoods are much more diverse, but I know these two neighborhoods have a large African American community.

I don't have a problem with neighbors of other races, in fact I have always been the minority in my neigborhood. I thought that it would be nice for my son to live in a neighborhood with more people who looked like him. This is my first semester at U of H so I will look for Riverside Terrace. I am somewhat familair with the MacGregor area. These areas might no be convenient though if my son is accepted at a school on the other side of town.

If you can think of any areas let me know.

Are you familiar with any EXCELLENT private schools near Riverside Terrace and MacGregor

Oh, I understand. I think that sometimes people misunderstand your need to be plugged into your culture in the community in which you live. They look at it as being racist or short sighted. And, I will tell you that you may get some slack from this post, but at the end of the day, it's your decision and you're the one living there. The place we call home should be comfortable for us.
I'll see what I can find in the way of schools and any other areas.
Hopefully more people will start to post with helpful advice instead of comments.

Thanks for being so helpful.

People wanting to live or worship with others of the same race or even religion is one of the easiet was to retain cultural ties. I think that assimilation into American culture is ideal since we all must live here together, BUT I think that it is important for people of all races to maintain some sense of their cultural identity be they African American or Irish American.
As a child I worshipped with people who shared my racial heritage. My son probably will not have that opportunity so we are searching for other ways to help him develop a stronger sense of racial pride and identity. Who knows where we may move, I just want to have options.
