Well, not quite that many, jammer. They've got 55,000 for the city proper, and 40 percent of them, I think, are still on the island tonight.

I think it was 90K who were in mandatory evacuation zones who stayed behind.

Legally, there really is no such thing as a true mandatory evacuation in Texas. They cannot remove you from your property against your will like they can in some places. Basically, a mandatory evacuation is a very strong suggestion, saying that if you stay, you're on your own. And even then, as you see, they're still pulling people out of Galveston and off Bolivar.

And there was my first flicker. Lost power for about 15 seconds while typing this out.

I may be done here before long for the night, but I will return...

I feel for your guys, it's gonna be a rough night. When I went through Ivan in '04 it hit after midnight and it was pitch black after the power went out. I remember shining a high powered spotlight out of the window and I still could not see a thing. It is frightening when you hear things happening but you can't see it. I think many of those people in Galveston haven't thought about that.

I googled her address but don't know how to get the elevation. 2800 block of 61st St.
Can someone tell me the elevation at her address (which is in the article)??
I asked someone who used EarthTools.org and the program gave this elevation:

37" 25'8" 60'0" W

I don't know how to interpret it - perhaps someone else does?

We're stronger than this hurricane. We're gonna deal with it.

Anyone still on Galveston Island is a certifiable idiot though, or is being paid to be there and probably still has more guts than brains.

Hoping everyone in Houston is safe tonight. My brother is a retired fireman & EMT so I won't even go into what it does to emergency personnel when people are stupid enough to stay thru what Galveston is being hit with. jfre81, we could have used you in Tampa in '04! Your posts are hysterical! I'd give you a 100 rep points but CD only let me give one!

Thoughts and prayers to you guys on the Gulf Coast. 43 years ago today I was born in Galveston. It's been weird watching this stuff on the weather channel all day. The video clips of Geraldo and the bear are priceless (maybe Geraldo is a bear, but that's a discussion for another thread). Keep Safe.
