yes. or your 1st floor AC will work harder keeping the house cool. try to set the first floor AC a degree of 2 lower than the top floor. in most cases, the 1st floor AC is larger than the top.

If you have a humidity problem upstairs, then run it or get a dehumidifier. If you have valuable furniture or documents upstairs, then run it. Otherwise, leave it off. The cold air downstairs is going to stay downstairs because heat rises, and cold air sinks!

I don't know about the rest of you but when icon7 talks air conditioning, I listen. I have become convinced that he knows more about air conditioners than any other person other than professional air conditioning experts. And I trust his advice more because he isn't trying to sell me something.

well what he said up there isnt the smartest. the AC isnt going to work harder necessarily, not all 2 story houses have 2 AC compressors but 2 temp zones. mine sucks air from the 2nd floor intakes when cooling and suck from 1st floor intake when heating. that solves humidity/moisture issues all thru out the house

This is exactly why I hate having the master bedroom downstairs. The upstairs becomes no-mans land.

I beg to differ. ask any AC professional or the manufacturers. They will tell you not to leave a unit off. My dad was in the business too. Plus I have a background in thermodynamics and fluid mechanics. with one unit, and 2 zones it uses manifolds...at least good designs to divert more cooling to the zone that is warmer. My home has 3 units and 4 zones and everything is controlled by a Honeywell control equipment and thermostats.
