I found a great hole in the wall off Airline called Chicago Italian Meats at Calvalcade. Looked like a ton of Midwestern people with a line out the door and a super cool atmosphere. Just down from the produce market. Still not as good as the one I had in St.Louis from a corner store off Woodson.

There is a place called "Chicago Italian Beef" on Airline off of 610 right after Calvalcade. It's not in the best part of town but being from Chicago they have great Italian Beef's and Gyros. The Polish Sausage aren't all that great like the dirty grease one's you could get with fries for $3 by the University of Chicago before they revamped that area but the drive is worth it. I go whenever I can. They also have Vienna Beef Hot Dogs as well.
Chicago Italian Beef gets so-so reviews (okay, 3 out of 5 stars but dammit I want 4 or 5 stars!). Be Happy (or anyone), have you discovered anywhere else?

Shoot, I need to be more careful reading c-d posts.

I totally read your title wrong...

I thought you were asking for a cheap gyn-o in Houston

Try Cafe Pita on Westheimer and near Wilcrest. I think it's $4.99 for gyro and fries. Great gyro and appetizers.

Nico Nicos is fine if you like overpriced salt laden food and eating surrounded by what seems like the entire jerk population of Houston.

My choice would be Falafel Factory on Prairie downtown. $5.50 Gyro sandwich with option of a very nice fresh salad or if you're a fat pig, fries. Closed Saturdays I believe.

Over-the-top salt (and garlic) is definitely Greek, or Greek-American. A gyro with Lebanese fusion is also what I prefer, and that goes for the entire cuisine. Naturally flavorful veggies, herbs & spice, olive oil, low sodium, no garlic or anything funky for that matter... can pig out and not get fat, nor sick with elevated blood pressure or GI issues.

As far as the type of clientele in that area, true to form- just like clockwork.
