I've been trying to start a group home for physically disabled for 3 years, house is built - finding the right people with the right funding is a real problem. There is a real need for "troubled teen" and "physically disabled" homes but Funding is not there. Parents are struggling, kids on the street, - I have a son (24) w/spinal injury and he has NO options - I've been researching for years - email me if you want some advise...debcolson@yahoo.com

Default Starting a GROUP HOME in Tx.

I have opened Group Homes in California, Nevada-( Las Vegas, Reno) and San Diego and northern California. I am interested in moving to Houston to open up some group homes there. Anybody know of who is the largest group home agency in Houston area. I am willing to work with someone and explore opening a home or more. I have opened 38 group homes. The key to it is owning the property. There is more also but would love to talk to someone there. I am in California now but planning on moving to Houston soon.

Default helpful info on starting a group home

The best option for starting a group home is to get a start up guide which provides detailed information on group home financing and business set up, licensing requirements, developing policies and procedures, and client service forms. There are a few websites on the net that provide good information on starting a group home:

Default wrong

[You are wrong there are angices who do fund these type of centers! I have worked at them and they are business ran by people who care. I am also looking to start one. quote=ZeroTX;5947110]So who would fund these troubled teens? I don't think the govn't supports troubled teenhood. They're all troubled to some degree. I know there is funding for the mentally disabled, so that might be a way to go. But frankly, IMO, you can't run something like that as a BUSINESS. It's something you do for people because you love it and you seek out the funds to break even and make a basic living. I guess I don't agree w/ your motives.[/quote]

To open a group home here in houston you have to be licensed by DFPS/CPS. As of right now Houston does not have any large private run "family business" group homes for children (a lot of the ones that were around in the past were closed for basically being mills).

CPS won't license a foster group home themselves anymore, but you could go to a private agency foster/adopt child placing agency to become licensed. That is for 6 or more children to teenagers. That would be the only way to become a "group home" for troubled teens yourself.

To start a business doing it with private pay or the business billing insurance well that's a whole other ballgame. You'd need to know how to acquire your own funding, building permits, staff, medical billing, therapeutic supports etc. you will still have to be contracted to or licensed by the state of texas through RCCL
