Oh my, if it's between Houston and San Diego, take Houston! You say you're trying to get away from outrageous prices, so you shouldn't even be considering Calif! I've lived in both places, so I know.

From a former Texan who moved to San Diego and is counting the days 'til she goes home: someone from NYC who is looking for a lower cost of living will feel more comfortable in Houston than in San Diego. Despite stereotypes and preconceptions, Houston is a more cosmopolitan city that's cheaper to live in. San Diego is more expensive, and Beach-bum is not just a style; it's a way of life. Say hello to plentiful jobs and haul yourselves down to the lone star state!

There is a bus system and a light rail that goes through some areas of interest, but nothing even close to cities in the northeast.

Saying all that, you'd probably like areas such as Midtown or Washington Ave. Houston has a good job market now, at least compared to the rest of the country. Cost of living is MUCH less than NYC.
Houston does have plenty of world class restaurants and shopping relative to most cities, but mass transportation is still not very developed yet.

Hope you'll make the move. Many thousands of New Yorkers have done so, so you'll have plenty of company.
