I am referring to a meat-and-potatoes store. I don't need an organic section, a selection of 500 European cheeses or exotic Oriental condiments.

the lowest would be HEB and the highest would be Randall's. Kroger is somewhere in the middle.

Super Wal-Mart is the cheapest.

But if you're not interested in that adventure, HEB or Kroger. I personally haven't found HEB to be any cheaper than Kroger, not in Clear Lake anyway.

Randalls is definitely overpriced.

Yes. HEB is a hit/miss depending on which store you visit. Some of them are really big-good selection-good service but others are so-so. If you need more asian stuff, Fiesta may be a good option.

Fiesta has good prices on meat. Your best bet is to check the sale flyers and shop where the items you like are on sale. Wal-mart will match sales prices if you bring in the flyer from Kroger, etc. It has to be the exact item and there are some restrictions.

Asian supermarkets have way better prices for seafood compared to any of the regular chains. We go to a market on Veteran's Memorial and you can buy fresh fish there for 50% of the price they charge at HEB/Kroger and they have a better selection too.

Foodtown has best prices IMO on all but frozen foods. Lately, their meat quality has been really good and their produce is always the freshest as compared to Walmart, and my local HEB.

Be wary of buying the cheap meat at Walmart, it is full of fillers and you get what you pay for.

I find HEB to be the lowest in general with Randall's being highest, Wal-Mart somewhere in between. Problem with Wal-Mart (other than being Wal-Mart) is that they don't have the specials that the standard chains do. Really you just have to keep your eyes open and check the circulars to see who's got the best deals THAT WEEK on what you're after.

I rarely shop at Kroger due to location, so I can't really say where they fit in.

Foodtown...although it's a little sketchy to me.
