My favorite restaurant is the Potatoe Patch just off the FM 1960. It is several blocks west of Hwy 59. It is borderline whether it is in Houston or Humble.

YEs I've been there and it is also a great place for southern food; however it is still kind of far and out of place for me to visit. Could anyone tell me a good little place that is in the loop or toward the SouthWest part of Houston?

When you say southern food, do you mean chicken fried steak or more soul food? Frenchy's fried chicken by UH is pretty good. Kelly's off 45 and Park Place has a monstrous chicken fried steak and baked potatoes.

For some home style cooking, Humble City Cafe in Humble seems to be one of the best I've had. I had an internship near IAH years ago and we would eat there once a week. They serve this complimentary cornbread in a skillet that is just, wow!

I would guess there has to be something in southwest Houston, but don't know anything offhand.

Some Southern/soul food places to try inside the loop or not too far outside:

Cleburne Cafeteria

Alfreda's Cafeteria on Flickr - Photo Sharing! (http://www.flickr.com/photos/irees/84080459/ - broken link)

http://www.b4-u-eat.com/houston/rest...ws/rsv0263.asp (just outside the loop)

Texas Cafeteria - The Heights - Houston, TX - Yelp

http://www.thebreakfastklub.com/

and of course Houston's This Is It Soul Food

I love Cleburne Cafeteria. Good heavens, I'd forgotten all about that place.

I know this is an old thread, but this restaurant is worthy of the huge bump. The Teacup Cafe at 8300 W. Sam Houston Parkway South is outstanding. It is owned by a Mandarin couple. I highly recommend the curry chicken. It comes in a soup bowl with either rice or noodles and carrots. There is something about their noodles and their cooking in general. If this place were in a more desirable location, it'd have four locations or perhaps more.

Pink's Pizza just opened their new location off of W. Gray. This is seriously the best pizza in Houston. NY style, not that Chicago nonsense. Wow! The Bada Bing pizza is out of the world!
