I am considering moving from San Antonio to The Woodlands. But before I do so, I would like to know how many software jobs there are in The Woodlands (or at least Northern Houston). Can someone help me out with that info?

My biggest fear is that I move there, lose my job, and then have to take a job in downtown Houston and commute every day.

I have tried searching on Monster, and I see a TON of software jobs in Houston. But most of them don't state where in Houston they are located. A lot just say "company confidential". So I am finding it hard to determine how many software jobs would actually be close to The Woodlands.

How many major companies are there in The Woodlands or Northern Houston? Has anyone else been in a similar situation and was forced to commute downtown?

I appreciate any advice on this subject.

you will probably have a commute, maybe not downtown but to the westside or by the airport or something. There are not a bunch of companies up in The Woodlands, and if you are lucky enough to find something up there, I have found they don't pay as much as if you worked somewhere else in the city. Everybody commutes in Houston and that is part of living in The Woodlands, but if you leave early enough there really is no traffic. Just a part of life. I commute around 40 min each way every day, but I would rather commute and live in The Woodlands than move closer to work. Good luck.

As Amanda said there's not very many tech companies in the woodlands and the jobs up there are few and far between. Anadarko is up there and employees quite a few people but they just bought western gas and someone else and I heard they have been laying off a ton of people due to duplication of jobs during the acquisitions. There's another tech company up there that develops blade servers called RLX technologies but I think their mainly focused on Hardware but i'm sure they have some software jobs to.
