Texas Driver's Test

When taking the actual, on the road test you must parallel park. Or try to anyhow. If you don't or won't you are automatically failed. If you merely do a bad job of it they take points off. Just don't run over the little poles they use to mark your "parallel parking spot."

I wouldn't call it simple, but there is no test, written or otherwise. You have to bring your passport or original birth certificate, along with your old license and your actual social security card. Also if you have a car registered to your name you have to bring your insurance and registration info. Oh, and there is a very specific order to things as far as cars go...you can't get your license until you get your car re-registered.

I've been in the Houston area for about 6 months now. Observing the drivers here, here are some pointers that I am sure the DMV is looking for in drivers:

- Don't stay too far behind anyone in front of you. Make sure that you are within the proper distance. Below 60 mph - 1 car length, anything faster, get closer.

- When you see someone in the next lane put on their turn signal, here it means to speed up, and drive right next to them.

- People here are obviously very impressed with "slalom driving" - You know, zig-zagging from one lane to another, at the fastest speed possible.

- When you get on a highway, don't bother looking - Everyone will get out of your way.

- If you mistakenly hit a pedestrian, don't stop and block traffic. You can just check the newspaper the next day to see if they got lucky.

- Traffic is unpredictable here - You don't know how long it will take you to get home. Have a few drinks before you get in the car.

- If you don't yet have a car - Get yourself a nice big SUV or Pick-Up Truck. I know they are totally unecessary for the average person. But, there is some secret reason that they are needed here. Hopefully it will be known one day.

I went online and got all the fee info, except for the cost for the preregistration inspection....how much is that?

My husband and I have valid Missouri Licenses and plan to move to Texas. Will have to take the written and driving text to get a valid Texas License?

No just written as long as you have a valid license.

TxDPS - Moving to Texas - assumes valid out-of-state license

TxDPS - Apply for Driver License/ID card - see item 3.) under section titled "Currently Licensed in Another State or Country"


3.) Surrender your VALID out-of-state learner or driver license, or a VALID out-of-country learner or driver license from France, Canada, or Germany, at the driver license office. The written and driving examinations will be waived, but you must still pass a vision exam.
OR
Surrender your EXPIRED driver license at the driver license office. You will be required to pass the written, driving and vision exams.
