Anybody have experience with remodeling/rehab in Houston? What does it cost around here? I've been searching the web, but the only numbers I'm seeing are from high-cost cities like New York and Chicago. I know you can build brand new houses in the Houston suburbs for a lot less than $200/sq.ft.

I need a house for my elderly mother that is "ADA compliant". Large bathrooms, wide hallways, no stairs, etc. I'm not looking for a castle or McMansion -- just a normal "middle-class" house. I'm trying to decide whether to build new or rehab an older fixer-upper. The question is, what does it cost to do a gut rehab of a 2,000 sq.ft. house?

If you just look at any of the newer construction projects - most would fit your purposes. Just get a single storey place. Halls are being made wide, bathrooms are larger than they have ever been.

Heck, most things in New Territory are under 12 yrs old and the single storey homes could be perfect. $80 per square foot for a 2000-2400 sq foot home would not be unrealistic and then it would not cost very much at all to add some ADA accessability options that are needed (rails, etc)
