Tree-planting volunteers are needed to help transform a lusterless stretch of Clay Road in northwest Houston into a wooded thoroughfare this weekend.
More than 12,000 trees will be placed in medians along a 1.3-mile stretch between Gessner and Blalock roads, the Texas Forest Service said in announcing the project.
The section is a commercial area that could use some sprucing up, Houston city Forester Victor Cordova stated in the agency’s announcement.
More than 1,000 volunteers are needed for the planting, which begins at 7:30 a.m., officials said.

Volunteers are asked to bring their own rakes, shovels, gloves and boots.
The project also includes competitive landscaping teams vying for bragging rights as the state’s fastest and most expert tree-planters.
They are competing in a statewide program organized by the Texas Urban Forestry Council. Saturday’s contest, which will take place at 10:30 a.m. at Clay Road and Lively Lane, is sponsored by the Houston Area Urban Forestry Council.

Any idea who is responsible for the tree planting on the Clay median between Eldridge and Brittmoore? What a jumbled, overgrown, clustered eyesore that turned out to be. The timeframe for that planting is close to this one. I wonder if they could have packed the trees any closer together? Now many of the weeds are taller than the trees and it looks like most of them are dead anyways. What a sad waste.

What kind of trees did they plant, Loblolly Pines?

The trees were just saplings so you can't even tell what they are. Not to mention the poor soil, coupled by the baking heat of 2 lanes of traffic on each side and no way to irrigate except for a water truck. Pretty poor.
