Cockatiels are probably the easiest of the non-parakeet variety. They are semi-hardy and can be taught to whistle and some can speak a bit. In our expeirence, the females were the most loving(?)...but unless you have an expert birder to help you, defining male and female can be very difficult. That is until your female lays a few eggs
Make sure your cage, of whatever bird you buy is plenty big and supply lots of toys that can be switched out to avoid boredom. Be prepared to clean up lots of seed from the surrounding area of the cage. Birds are very messy, no matter what variety.

Thanks to those that are truly helping. I've been wanting a parrot for years and will not buy until I know more about them, but wanted to find a place in town that may sell them. Thanks again.

A Parrot's Cove (Jones Rd and 1960) and Adventures in Birds (7414 Westview- near IKEA) both have a good selection- anything from parakeets to Macaws. Just make sure you do your research and know your toleration of noise. I have a parakeet, 14 year old Quaker Parrot (great first bird), and a 5 year old cockatoo. All need LOTS of love and attention. Good luck!!

If anyone is a parrot owner for...a life sentence (25 years) or more, his comments are welcome.

It is so romantic to have a lifetime compagnion, while a dog dies at 15 years...

I recommend Adventures in Birds http://www.adventuresinbirdsinc.com/

Not assuming anything I highly recommend you get a book on parrots...there is a very good one called Guide to a Well Behaved Parrot.

Learn about the type of parrot you are considering. I owned a parrot and believe me they are high maintenance if you do it correctly. If you don't you will end up with major behavior problems. Parrots are so intelligent, sensitive, needy, messy, and can live up to 80 years, but make great companions. So many people run out and buy a parrot without fully understanding the bird and its needs. Please don't be one of those people.

Are captive bred parrots available? Is ask b/c of this from wiki:

"A large number of parrot species are in decline, and several species are now extinct. Of the 350 or so living species of parrot 130 species are listed as near threatened or worse by the IUCN.[42] There are numerous reasons for the decline of so many species, the principal threats being habitat loss, hunting, and for some species, wild-bird trade."
