Your price range should be OK if you are looking for a one bedroom or one bedroom with study. You might even find two bedroom or a loft, but probably not in as good of condition.

A quick search on HAR in MLS areas 4, 16, and 17, between $850-1050 yielded 68 hits. There are definitely more on Craigslist and Rent.com.

Other zip codes:
77019 is River Oaks/Allen Parkway area (expensive homes, but very diverse rental scene)
77054 is Med Center/Holly Hall area
44401 is Bellaire (won't be much there, mostly upscale single-famiily)
77004 is Museum District-ish (expensive homes but very diverse rental scene)

Again, thank you all for the very helpful information.

If the helpfulness and kindness which you have all shown through your posts reflects that of the general population of Houston I am sure that we are going to love it there! Not to mention we will not have to deal with snow anymore

I will be reviewing all the information and doing some more research tonight on the areas mentioned. From a brief look, it appears as if Rice Village would be a great place for us. Montrose also looks like a place which we would enjoy. We still have lots of research to do.

My girlfriend is very lucky to have this opportunity; however, she definitely deserves it! She is very smart; Brown Univ. graduate, scored a perfect score on her SAT’s in High School, top 90% percentile on her Psychology GRE’s, works at Kennedy Krieger (part of Johns Hopkins Campus) as a Medical Researcher for kids with Autism and ADHD, etc. [As you can tell I am very proud ]

Any more information would greatly be appreciated.

Another thing you might consider is a over-the-garage or guest-house apartment.

This is a little outside of the box but , as many people said, Rice Village is a great area ... perfect for you in fact based on your description ... but pretty pricey for a decent apt $1200 might be tough to find. In fact there are mainly single family homes in the area. However, many of the larger ones have over-the-garage (3-4 car in some cases) apartments for servants and/or mothers-in-law. Might be able to find one of those that isn't being used. Might have to mow the lawn once a week or something. :-) Also, that is common in an even nicer neighborhood River Oaks (creme d'la creme but farther from the nightclubs and restaurants than Rice Village/W. U). Still quite close to all of that and the campus.

We are going to move to Downtown Houston or Midtown at the end of the year. My wife will be going to U of H Engineering. The Engineering school is at main campus and I would rather live under a bridge than live in that area. (I was gonna say I would rather live under the CULLEN street bridge, but that is where it is actually at!)
Anyhow, is the school your girlfriend will be going to Downtown or at main campus?

We are really intrigued to live in a highrise. We never have and would love the view and being close to everything.

UH has a new loft near the Bauer College. It's really nice. Might want to check that out or see it on UH's website.

Go Cougs! Beat Texas Tech this saturday! WHOOOOOOOSE HOOOOUSE?

Museum District apartments would have the benefit of the light rail within walking distance... good for going out at night etc. Also an easy drive to UH down McGregor... 10 minutes probably. The larger complexes will have pools.

The lofts are nice.. but since only your girlfriend is going to UH I wouldn't live there.

I strongly suggest buying 2 cars, and finding a nice spot in West University.

It's very quiet and chill but near Galleria and 10mins. from Downtown.

Good luck
