My family and I are relocating to houston from the mountains in utah. I have to say we are very sad to be leaving such a beautiful small town where we enjoy the many outdoor activities a mountain town provides. I have two small children and at first I think we are looking to rent a house and get a feel for the area. Most important we are looking for a safe area with active young families and good schools. Somewhere with a half decent commute to the city (although I know traffic is bad). Hopefully an place with lots to do outdoors- parks, trails, etc... Can anyone recommend some areas for us to start our search?

If you like lots of trees and parks then take a look at Kingwood (Kingwood - Home) and the Woodlands (The Woodlands - The Woodlands is the #1 master-planned community in Texas - north of Houston.), really depends on where your work will be as far as commute, Houston is a huge city.

It all depends on where you are going to work and what your price range is. Don't be fooled by the new housing being built - a lot of it is crap. Stay open minded about existing construction in established neighborhoods with mature landscaping

You might consider somewhere on the south side then. Try Pearland.

On the south side I would go with Pearland, Friendswood, Clear Lake, League City or Seabrook -- all have great schools and good quality of life for families.

I think the poster means the south side of downtown, not the south side of town.

Those cities and suburbs are fairly close to downtown and commute isn't bad even if poster is referring to South side of downtown...............
