HI all,

We are thinking of moving to Houston TX and was wondering what the property tax rates are? Does Houston have a property tax on cars also?

Does your home property tax rate include both city and country tax rate?

any info would be very helpful.

Thanks in advance.

Scott

Also depending on the county the property is located in, you may want to look up the tax rate at the appropriate county appraisal district site. You have to call some of them, Harris County for example has them listed on its website. Check it out here Harris County Appraisal District good luck.

Total tax rates will include all county, city taxes etc... There can be as many as 9 different taxing entities that get their hands in the property tax cookie jar. The total rates will vary from a low of 2% to a high of somewhere in the low 4% range.

That is no lie, I am in the process of buying a home now, but still better than renting I think.

It's all relative - if you live in PA, NY, DE you pay state and local wage taxes right out of your paycheck. Some areas (such as Wilmington where I work) take another cut for the pleasure of working in the city. In Houston, you have one property tax and then little taxes, such as MUD, emergency tax fund, etc. On a $300,000 expect to pay anywhere from $6,000 to $13,000 depending on the area of Houston you are living. There is a homestead exemption that you can file each year, which knocks your total tax number down. You can also protest your appraised home value every year with the Harris County Appraisal District. In all, we found that while property taxes are higher, there is less tax coming out of you paycheck so it evens out when you compare.

Generally speaking, the overall tax rate goes up the further out from town you go. Inside the core the rate is around 2.5% but appraised values are higher. I don't think the total rate goes any higher than 2.9% if you're in Houston proper. The low 3's is pretty normal for the suburb cities, mid-high 3's for exurb areas. For the most part the taxes in the suburbs are higher because of the school district. HISD taxes are relatively low but- you generally get what you pay for. At least you can deduct these taxes at the end of the year. And even though there is no state income tax, you can still deduct a sales tax amount based on income (or receipts).
