My fiancee and I are moving to Houston this July so that I can start a position at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center (OST and Almeda) and are looking for an apartment complex. Your recommendations are appreciated greatly!

There are a few stipulations:
-We cap our rent at $1200/month, 1BR w/ den/study or 2BR, like to be around 800-1000sqft
-Looking for a decent commute (less than 30-45 minutes)
-Decently safe area (subjective, I know)
-Pet-friendly

We have been looking at the Park Lakes apartments off of Buffalo Speedway, outside of 610. Can anyone comment on this area/complex? Other suggestions for a suitable place? I'm sure a thousand posts like this come up each day, but my search did not turn up any recent applicable information.

Thank you!

There are some nice apts in the Midtown area that may allow you a short commute or even the opportunity to use the train. Check Calais (sp)? It is the area near Westheimer and Louisiana.

Let me ask one more question: Does anyone take heed of the popular apartment rating sites? I see lots and lots of apartments with sub-50% recommendations. Your thoughts?

I only rented in a corporate relocation in that area, so I know whats close. With that said I bought a townhouse a couple blocks away. I like the area for young/middle age professionals. Havent read much on the ratings pages, Sorry.

When I've thought about moving into an area I like to walk in pubs nearby to see the folk that frequent and pick their brains about the area. May I suggest Maple Leaf, Doghouse Tavern, Front Porch Pub to name a few in Midtown.

Any other comments/suggestions? We are planning a trip down there in a couple weeks to check out apartments and want to know where to go and where to skip...

Thank you again!
