Round Top - pop 77 (between Brenham and La Grange on Hwy 237 80 miles from DT Houston): Founded 1821, Joel Robinson who captured Santa Anna was from RT - , colonial times had 500 pop. Go to a concert at Festival Hill - www.festivalhill.com (http://www.festivalhill.com - broken link) $25 or Univ of Texas Winedale Shakespeare performance $10 - visit the dozens of restored buildings from 1820s to 1890s on ten acres at Heinkle Square $5 - eat at the Round Top Cafe $10-24, mentioned in Newsweek OR The Oaks for local people $8-15, have a drink at the Wine Shop and mix with the locals, often a band playing. Three art galleries, all free to enter. Cigar Shop is fun. The Lutheran Church has an organ with cedar pipes. See the restored Hope Lutheran Church which is the Library with a playground for the kids. Spring: Bluebonnets, Summer: parade for July 4th, Winter: Christmas parade.

Lady Bird Johnson wildflower center in Austin, McDonald Observatory in the Davis mountains (might be more than 4 hours!), Eagle Eye Observatory (http://www.austinastro.org/facility.html - broken link)in Burnet (BEST guides), the museum of print history in Houston...

will post more as i think of them

Some outdoors places:

Enchanted Rock
Brazos Bend
Aransas National Wildlife Reserve
Big Thicket National Forest
Caddo Lake
Canyon of the Eagles (about 5 hrs)
Colorado Bend SP (about 6 hours)
Padre Island National Seashore (about 6 hours)

Or, if you really want to make it a "day trip" *grin* - Big Bend NP, and Big Bend Ranch SP are about 10-11 hours West.
