What's this about an underground area in Houston? Is it extensive? I read somewhere about underground malls or stores that connect different buildings in the downtown area?

What's that all about?

Extensive? Well-used? Worth seeing?

Or are they mostly just for people who work downtown and getting around a bit easier?

Its kinda extensive. There several stores and alot of places to eat down there. Its only open during business hours M-F. There is nothing really special about it and would say not worth going out of your way to see it.

About 6-7 miles of walkway. Basically it's a loop with different corridors branching out from different sides into various areas of downtown. There is also another (unconnected) system serving the courthouse district on the north end of downtown. The tunnels are dotted with little shops and eateries, similar to what you would find at an airport terminal. Some of the tunnels are combined with skywalks.

The tunnels tend to be more crowded during the summer months when extremes in temperature begin to prevail. It does tend to take away from the visible downtown population however.

Houston's best kept secret IMO.

Wow, that's pretty extensive for a walkway.

Are there any picture of it online?

You can download a pdf system map here

There's also a neat little interactive map here at the Houston-Tunnels website.

It seems to be also similar to a MALL? But I'd guess mostly smaller type of stores and shops as opposed to large chains?

I wonder how much it would cost to rent out retail space down there...

6-7 miles of it...how's the security? Part of me envisions airport/mall, and part of envisions dark alleyways and stairs leading up to the 'sunlight' in various crevices of the place.

All in all, it sounds much more intriguing/interesting than it probably actually is.

i was thinking the same thing..... looks exactly like a mall. well a cross between a mall and an airport terminal.

not a bad thing though. i was expecting cold, raw concrete underground tunnels. looks pretty good imo.

found some pretty good videos on youtube (it seems some of these tunnels aren't for the claustrophobic):

YouTube - Downtown Tunnels - 1

YouTube - Downtown Tunnels - 4
