I am moving to Houston. I do not know a lot about Houston. I was considering Kingwood - (I would prob be on the North East side of Houston for work). So it looked like it made sense.

I am a young professional - that is past the party stage - and would like a place that is nice and peaceful - but not too far of a commute from the loop.

Also money is an issue (I am still paying off my student loans) but I'd like to be in an area that I do not have to worry much about crime. Has anyone had any success with any of the roommate finders?

Thank you.

Kingwood is a nice family area, many professionals live there and commute downtown.

If you want a closer commute on the northeast side you might want to consider a few of the communities around the beltway and east of 59 north. I believe Summerwood in in that area. Do a google search of Summerwood and see if that community would be a good fit for you.

Kingwood is fantastic ... Low crime, stable housing, close to main roads

Thanks for your input - I have been looking online for apartment (I am currently in Tallahassee, FL) I perused a few home listings - and it might be a better deal to buy than rent; so I might look into that.

That puts you on the very low end for Kingwood. You would be looking at a small house built in the late 70s/early 80s that needs some work. Here is a sample of what you could get:

3123 Brookdale Dr, Kingwood, TX 77339

2022 Oak Shores, Kingwood, TX 77339

Chris is spot on with his assumption on what is available. At any given time within 10% of $100,000 you will find maybe 5-6 homes with most of them being foreclosures. With this said Kingwood is a great community and those communities along the beltway other than Park Lakes are almost as expensive and inventory is rising which suggest you could see some price declines in the near future. Kingwood has kept a pretty low level of inventory, sales are hardly off, and Kingwood has been posting increases in price despite all the mortgage market troubles. They have been small around the 1% level but still price increases.
