So, with the whole swine flu thing.....this child that died in Houston.....if you were those parents what would you do? Why aren't the borders being closed? It's ridiculous! That child came from Mexico and if they were really monitoring that much, he should not have been aloud in the country. But I forgot that here in the great country of America, Mexico comes first. Do you know that i've been to quite a few drug stores (no names mentioned) and there are no flu medications and no surgical masks (even though they don't help apparently). I asked the managers where everything has gone......being shipped to Mexico. I have a baby.....if something was to happen and he died from this....someone would be held responsible. I guess it's not a big deal to certain people in Washington because they've had their doses of medicine and don't have to worry. They are more worried about flying planes way too low in cities that have been attacked.....but who knew there would be a panic.....how strange that people still remember 9/11.

Anything you buy over the counter for the flu is not going to help with this strain. Tamiflu or Relenza are the two antiviral med. they are suggesting and they are by prescription only. If your that worried than go to a doctor and get a prescription.

It figures...
They better start stocking up on supplies here. After that death here in Houston I can see people starting to panic. ie: Are the hospital employees infected now? Will they spread it to their family members who will then spread it out further?
Who knows.

I'm finding that the Houston Chronicle Online's SciGuy is giving very good, relavent and up to date advice on how to deal with this. His advice is don't panic, wash your hands and be planning what to do when your kids' schools and daycares are closed for a week or more...which could happen if it gets worse.

i'm not personally worried, yet, the thing thats bugging me is that we are more worried about the people in mexico than here. why do we always have to be worlds bandaid? shouldn't we worry about trying to prevent it from happening here, for example, close the borders!

36,000 people die from the regular flu every year. Mostly older people and infants. If your baby were to catch the regular flu, develop pneumonia and die, who would be to blame? Is someone held responsible?

In today's world, "closing borders" and restricting travel is not very helpful. It'll just get in another way.

A friend of mine just told me that she went to a WalMart yesterday near Waller to buy some hand sanitizer for our offices but they didn't have anymore.

That's an understandable point of view, but look at it another way. If your neighbor's yard has a gigantic mound of fire ants (or bees, or some other pest) and he doesn't have the resources to deal with it, are you really better off helping to treat HIS yard or focusing only on your own? I'd rather kill the main hive than try and track down the stray ants that wander across the "border". Helping Mexico IS helping ourselves in this case. You really can't just quarantine the entire country over this relatively minor disease.

(Either every nation in the world would have to close off travel to and from mexico completely or we'd have to close off every other nation to ourselves for the 'close the border' theory to actually work. )

Take it easy, don't panic, just be smart about things and you'll be fine. This is not the end of the world. It's a slightly nastier than normal version of the flu, nothing more.
