I've used Homejoy before (homejoy.com). Guaranteed $20/hr rate, completely legal, very high quality work, background checks, customizable bookings online, and huge liability insurance. They have options to do laundry, etc., as well.

If anyone can recommend someone in Southwest Katy/North Richmond area. Only have 1700sqft to clean but would be nice to have someone come twice a month.

This.

I rather hire the house work out and go on a weekend bike ride.

Someone earlier commented about youngish DINKS always hiring people to clean. That also seems to be the rule for people I work with who fall into that category. They are good people who work hard and also have to devote a lot of time outside of work to their kids, so I don't blame them. As for me, I'm not a dink and I don't have kids ... and, frankly, I'm kinda repelled by the idea of having to hire a person to clean up my place. Maybe it's because we never had a "cleaning lady" when I was growing up, even though we were relatively affluent. It just seems weird to me that affluent americans are no longer able to cut their own grass and clean their own houses.

interesting comments, mostly by the ladies, so let me share my view/perspective on "outsourcing" the cleaning job.

Wife likes to clean the house and actually in my view it's almost a territorial thing for her + she has little trust in cleaners. I actually prefer getting a cleaner to get things done, so here is how we usually do it:
1) get the cleaning outsourced and pay for it
2) while she is cooking I help with the cleaning (except bathroom , so all is done by the time lunch is ready and we enjoy the rest of the weekend

it's about 50%-50% between 1) and 2) how we do it

4000+ sq ft, no carpet so speeds up cleaning and leaves little space for the dust to settle

call me crazy, but 2) often feels good teamwork and strengthens the relationship we have in my opinion

a good cleaning person is worth the money to me. Have had a couple poor ones that were wastes though. Dust really gathers at my place and I like getting my floors and baseboards wwiped down
