I was told it is very nice to spend a day at Crystal beach. Does anyone knows if the beach took a hit from Ike and if so, has it been recovered?

Tons of open space for sure. Still lots of pilings lying around like pick-up-sticks. I was there a month ago & saw 2 houses completely upside down on the side of the beach highway road. The beaches are cleaned up. But I would be careful of debris in the water, possibly.

Thanks. Is it worth a trip with young children?

guess it's best staying put in either east or west beach then...any other recommendations? (we are not interested in water theme park)

Thanks.

Be prepared, one thing that is definitely missing from the beaches is access to a bathroom. While the beaches have been fixed, many of the structures including toilet facilities are gone. This can lead to problems as you can guess. You may have to travel a ways to a store or public facility depending on where you choose to access the beach.

East Beach was a damn wreck in Jan '09. I need to go check it out again sometime but it will take a long time to recover.

For a day trip go to West Beach at Pirates Beach. Park inside the subdivision by the houses facing the beach. Just park your car on the street. Then you can use Trammels Store (at entrance to Pirates Beach) for the rest room. It's a nice beach with no car access. I like that better with little ones.

I agree with Lizzy. Pirates Beach is good. You can also go to Stewart Beach which is really nice, too, closer to the east side of the Island.
