Looking for somewhere close to take the kids for the weekend. All we require are sand and water. Is there a state park or something along the shore?

No...plenty of places to enter the water, but no beach or sand. Kemah has the boardwalk for rides, shopping and restaurants...but nothing what your thinking about.

Only sandy beaches are in Galveston and other Gulf shore areas, not anywhere on the bay.

One exception would be the Texas City Dike, but it's still closed.

Just about 15 minutes north is the Sylvan Beach. I think that is in La Port.

In Baycliff you have some beachy areas where people swim but it's a bit rough with the rocks.

How bout Clear Lake Park? That ain't too far either. Maybe 15 minutes from Kemah?

Sylvan Beach is not a "beach" per say. It is all bulkheaded and rocked. Right now, you cannot access the shore except at the boat ramps due to reconstruction of Ike damage and the pier was pretty much wiped out and has not been repaired yet.
If I recall correctly, Clear Lake Park is bulkheaded as well, no beaches.

Correct...It looked like she was looking for sand for her kids to play in ...absolutely nothing like that in this area. Galveston would be the closest.
