I just add all regular bills over the course of 1 year and divide by 2. Some bills are every month, a couple are every other month, twice a year, and yearly. Don't forget food, maybe forecast it on a "per diem" basis and multiply by 180 to get your 6 months.

It takes awhile to build it up but if you don't have any debts other than mortgage you'll be surprised how fast it builds. That debt interest makes those banks rich... people just don't understand the power of exponents.
