I grew up in Cypress (Copperfield). It was a great place to grow up but there isn't much to do there. The housing is affordable and if your working in Cypress I think you should probably find a place somewhere in Cypress. The commute from Katy would be a nightmare. Barker Cypress, Hwy 6, and Eldridge are all clogged and I just don't see how Katy is better than Cypress. Both are your standard suburbs. Go with the area nearest to your job.

As an educator originally from a different region of the country, the public schools in Texas focus on testing rather than the academics needed for university. (Moving to EOC exams rather than the worthless TAKS might remedy this.) I have friends who teach in CFISD and KISD and it's all pretty much the same. Parents make the difference in the child's education. Stay involved in your kiddos' schooling and they'll be fine.

Also, while North Cypress may have more desirable demographics, so to speak, I can tell you as an insider there that all the high schools North of 290 have plenty of drugs and other such nonsense happening. Also, cheating is a huge problem and many of these affluent parents don't have a problem with it if it helps their children get ahead. Sure, Cy-Lakes, Cy-Ridge and Cy-Springs are rougher around the edges but there are some great kids there and excellent teachers. In fact, Langham Creek is probably the most balanced high school in CFISD, drawing students from poor and weathly areas and is racially diverse.

Here's the latest article on CFISD Cy-Fair struggles to balance school needs with low taxes | Front page | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle

btw; Check out the student demographic chart, that so called "more desirable demographics"(code word for more whites) is changing by the year.

I recall reading that the Cypress area doesn't enforce their deed restrictions very well. Methinks they ought to put their eyes on the ball in that department.

*Sigh*...and again, this is what happens when too much development takes place.

Well, I think you can see what kinda class you're dealing with here from USC619's post.

Stay classy, USC619!

Wow, you guys are great! You have no idea how much all of this is helping. My boys (4 years and 5 months) are the focus of every decision I make, so neighborhood and schools trump any other part of the decision making process in finding our first home.

It really helps to get specific neighborhods to avoid or lean toward. It's been a while since I've been to Houston, and the only recent visit was pretty much in and out. I'll be down this weekend from the 11th to the 14th, so I'll need to narrow the poosibilities as much as possible before the hunt begins. I'll definately focus on the neighborhoods provided here.

I just love the different personalities on this forum; I guess that's what makes it so special!

Looks like I'm going to focus on North Cypress, but if I have to go to Katy it's nice to know that its a viable option. I've noticed that many homes in Copperfield are in Houston. Is that where the 529 rule comes in? Should I avoid Houston homes in CFISD altogether?

Just because a home has a Houston address doesn't mean the home is inside the Houston city limits. I currently have a Houston address and I'm nowhere near the city limits. I would think that few, if any, homes in Copperfield are actually in Houston.

Copperfield is a nice area and zoned to good schools. I also love the YMCA there, too. It won't be Whitey-McWhiteville but is full of good middle class folks of all backgrounds. Again, I know many families who are happy South of 529. Deerfield is a very nice neighborhood as are some of the newer neighborhoods in the 77084 area; this is Houston zip with CFISD schools. My cousin just bought a new home in Pine Forest Green and likes it there, as well as his commute to the Energy Corridor.

Best of luck in your home search.
