Yeah, if something is 150k close in, be prepared for maintenance or maintenance fees adding in to your bottom line.

I lived in Midtown and had an easy reverse commute to Gpoint...This is the area you need to move to. Midtown/Montrose/Rice Military.

I am not tall, but at 6'0" 250, I never had a problem stumbling home from bars in Midtown. Just a few homeless asking for handouts.

I'm planning to buy a lanterra home, it's literally a walk to downtown and the houses are in a gated community. The area is very up and coming with a ton of new homes being built around the area.

I thought Lanterra's model home community east of downtown (Cline/Grove St. area) was section 8...oops! I'd get a killer inspection on any of those type homes. Whatever it is, though, it's better than what was there: Cline/Grove/Bayou/Gillespie house map

You CAN find a cheap townhome in the loop. However, it will be in a "transitional neighborhood" aka ghetto. Here in Northside there townhomes for $60,000 brand new.

There are some townhomes ~150,000-200,000 east of downtown if you like that kind of scenery, and the maintenance fees aren't all that horrible (~200-400/month)..

Thanks for the replies. I decided not to buy right now and would rather rent for 6 more months. I have the sinking feeling that there won't be a quick recovery to this mess.
