Hi there, I was accepted into UH and was looking around the area on google maps, and it looks kinda like a transitioned area. Some parts are nice and others not so much.

So what is the area around UH like? Is the third ward dangerous? Any info would help. Thanks!!

There are several threads on this already.

Houston's urban landscape tends to be a block by block adventure, with good areas next to bad. This is especially true in the 3rd ward/Riverside Terrace areas.

Roughly to the west, along Elgin, is a rough, low income area. Immediately to the south is University Oaks, a very nice area of $225,000 to $700,000 homes.

It fronts N. Macgregor. North and South Macgregor form the core of the Riverside Terrace neighborhoods. Home to many of the city's African American elite.

There was a Chronicle article a little while back that Lisa Gray did.

So it all depends on which direction you are headed.

The immediate area around UH is not nice but within close driving distance of some very nice areas. Personally, I would want to have a car if I went to school there.

I work at UH and I'm impressed overall with the quality of the education. Would you be an undergrad or a grad student?

3rd Ward is suppose to be the best out of all Wards.

Many consider Riverside to be part of 3rd ward, and many do consider it a beautiful area. Of course as Lisa Gray's article pointed out, many of the old homes are being demolished & replaced by lot swallowing McMansions and non-descript townhomes, so I am sure it will be more to your liking soon.

It's not just about the old homes. When you go on elgin to U of H, you will know. Guess that you've done that trip. A few nice houses don't make up for this.
