So, I'm on a university student insurance plan and I think that it expires at the end of August- I think I am about 6 weeks pregnant, but because I'm already pregnant I cannot get another insurance policy to cover me! We make just barely too much for medicaid... This would be our second child and I'd really like to go to a midwife this time around. Does anyone know where to go for midwifery services? Any ideas of the cost compared to the traditional OB route? Just trying to plan things out!

Highly recommended the Midwives @ The Women's Specialist of Houston. A group of midwives who deliver in hospital. Not sure if Midwives are cheaper than OBs know you get more personalized care so doubt it. This particular group are worth their weight in gold. I would use them even if I had to pay out of pocket. They are awesome!!!! They work with a group of OBs so you might have that option too.

We went with a midwife for ours and it was $4,800 total. Pre-natal, delivery, after birth checkups, and lactaction consulting were all included.

Insurance covers some, depends on how good your plan is, but it will most likely be out of network. Likely due to political reasons first and foremost.

We were in Pasadena though, between the loop and beltway, maybe 20ish minutes from downtown. DM me for more detailed info if interested.

In our opinion and from talking to friends, Nanci Stanley is one of the most highly recommended midwives in the Houston area. http://www.houstonmidwife.net/

It really will depend on if you want a hospital birth, birth center birth or homebirth.
I highly recommend Jackie Griggs, who is a CNM and runs Bay Area Birth Center in Pasadena. It isn't central Houston, but I lived in Beaumont with my last two births and would drive 1.5 for the excellent care that I received there.
I am a childbirth educator and doula, so I have seen many obstetrical care providers, and I will say that her care is hands down the best.

The hospitals in Houston are not the most mother-baby friendly and midwifery care is by far much less expensive, as there are far fewer unnecessary interventions involved.

I believe medicaid will cover you automatically if you're expecting.

Janet Little with Reunion Midwives is awesome! She might be a little bit of a drive for you but well worth it! She delivered our first son before she branched out on her own.

Janet is wonderful! I saw her when she was in practice with Drs. Bernell, Plummer, Zavala, and Boyd. I might see Janet again and have her deliver our next one. She's a great midwife!
