I'm tired of the employment process. Usually, for every available job there are at least 500 resumes submitted. Of these 500 resumes, a handful of them are reviewed by actual human eyes and maybe 30 or 40 people are invited to come in for an interview. Of these 30 or 40 people, only one person gets the job. There is simply too much competition.

If I apply for McDonalds or some other low-paying job, I am likely to be disqualified for being over qualified just becuase I have a Masters degree and an undergraduate degree from an accredited university with Summa *** Laude honors and a 4.00 GPA (sorry for the astericks. This site will not allow me to type Summa *** Laude because it thinks I'm referring to ejaculating when really I'm referring to my academic distinction). My experience with a Fortune 500 company will almost certainly be frowned on by a fast-food joint. The long list of the academic awards I've earned probably will not help either. McDonalds may see my resume and get the idea I'll leave quicker than the blink of an eye as soon as the economy recovers (which is true).

I just want to find a job where I don't have to compete, and a job as a Mexican Day Laborer sounds perfect. The problems is, I'm obviously white and could never pass as a Mexican.

Will I get beaten to death if I am caught hanging out with the rest of the Mexicans? I would rather not become subject to racial violence.

Will I be able to work with everyone as an English-speaker? I hardly speak a word of Spanish.

Is there an actual organization where day laborers meet, or do they just hang out by Home Depots on their own free will?

Where should I go if I want to be a Mexican Day Laborer in Houston?

My apologies for for any offense that may be taken by referring to day laborers as 'Mexican' day laborers, but it is the truth that well over half of day laborers in Houston are Mexican. I do acknowledge that not all of them are Mexican, but I do feel a significant number of them are Mexican and warrant a prefix to the job title.

I've seen the South Park episode, and sure, It's funny, but I don't that it applies directly to my situation. The Mexicans did not 'take my juuurb', but rather the dismal economy 'took my juuuurb'.

I would appreciate some serious answers to my questions.

You won't get your ass kicked, stdspk. Likely, they will laugh at you. The Mexican day laborers already know that you, as an American do not have what it takes to work the jobs and the hours they do. In the eyes of employers, it isn't about filling "Jobs Americans won't do", but rather "Jobs Americans will not work as hard at as foreigners." And I am dead serious about my answer.

I've seen them gathered around Home Depots and other places. Usually in the afternoons, so more than likely it's not as easy as you think to get a day labor job.

You'll probably be out in the heat for days until you get 1 day job. Might as well stay at home in the a/c surfing the net.

Most work for $100 a day, if you want an "edge" hold up a sign saying, "I'll work for $80". That ought to do it.

I thought that Houston was one of the top four cities for finding jobs.

It's still tough for someone who finished college less than five years ago without an internship and without knowing anyone who can refer me to an actual job.

Moderator cut: orphaned People who spend their life savings get to Houston via trunks of cars, walking through deserts and running from law enforcement are going to work harder than us natural born citizens.
