Why can't Houston switch locations with Dallas? Why, Why, Why, Why, Why. . . . . . . .

Because the people who started the city had the foresight of a great city and more importantly a great city with a great port.

actually houston is only here because of the 1900 hurricane because galveston was houston before houston was houston. after that storm people moved to the "small town" and look what we got.

Don't worry. One day Dallas/Houston/San Antonio/Austin will one day be a giant metroplex interconnected with high speed rail and other highly efficient transportation options allowing you to live in one and work in the other.

Edit: My opium haze finally evaporated and I just saw what I wrote... high speed rail and transportation options? Good lord, that's some good opium.

Why would we want to be in the middle of nowhere?

Because the Allen brothers (real estate brokers) got a large plot of crappy land for ~$1.40/acre - a grand sum of about $9,400. They convinced others was nice and beautiful - c. 1830s ads they put in northern papers read that we had a healthful river where "vessels from New Orleans or New York can sail without obstacles to this place. There is no place in Texas more healthy, having an abundance of excellent spring water, and enjoying the sea breeze in all its freshness." They were pretty much con-men, but after they fled Houston (or died) things actually started looking up..

Oh yeah, I'm fully aware this isn't serious, I just saw a perfect opening to rip on Dallas. So there.

To the anon rep commenter - no need to give me a point to "edumacate" me - a personal message would work just fine. And I was mocking the Allen Brothers and this "fair city" so no worries. I get the jest/gist.

Some people just have no sense of humor. God knows the Allen Brothers did.
