Anyone buy one in Houston recently? I haven't purchased one in like 10 yrs and was wondering if the sales tax is still 6.25%? Also, what are the fees and the amount these dealers are charging nowdays? I know document fees are $50, but can't recall other ones. I am trying to get an idea of what to expect. Thanks.

6.25% of your net purchase (new car value less trade-in). Fees vary by dealer, but expect a few hundred to be safe.

In 2007. 6.25% is Sales Tax. Depends on the dealer.
$675 shipping fees if its a foreign car.

Destination charge depends on the car. We bought 2 new this year and one was $1200 and the other $1350.00. Also, a possible "gas guzzler" tax, depending on the car. Fees included: $50 Doc. fee, $314.37 "dealers inventory tax",$132.55 for license, transfer, title and reg. fees and insp. and $5 for full service deputy fee (whatever that maybe!) The other car was bought new out of state and they charged a straight $450 for all fees. Figured it out at the time, and it was to our advantage.

I recently sold a car of mine private party that I actually just bought back in December of 2008. When I decide to buy another car, can I use the sales receipt from my sale to lower the amount I pay in sales tax when I buy a new car? I know in Missouri and California you had 1 year to use that deduction, but someone said that in Texas you can't...is that true? I would hate to have to pay taxes on $40k again, 8 months after I just did that, but it simply was not worth it to trade the car in, since dealers are not offering anything anymore since the economy is hurting..you are lucky to get Manheim prices right now.

I'm not sure, but I don't think it holds true for private party sales. I do know, in Tx., you can bank your sales tax credits with a dealer for up to a yr.

I just bought a new car last week. I paid a little over $1000 for TTL with a sales price of $16,000. Hope that helps!

Hi JamesLang,

I just bought a new Honda this month and I paid 6.25% in sales tax.

50.00 documentary fee
43.88 dealer inventory tax
135.55 License, Title, Transfer and Registration Fees, Inspection-good for 2 years
5.00 Full Service Deputy Fee

That was all of the fees!

Shelbygirl,
Did you buy your vehicle in Houston? There seems to be a huge disparity between yours and dldpuy. . Or maybe this happens more often than not?
