We've made this drive many times. If you just want a place to sleep try the Red Roof in Milton Fl, safe, cheap, clean, friendly, very convenient.

If you'd like something a little different try the Best Western by the Battleship park in Alabama (Mobile). We stayed there once so the kids could see the battleship and the planes in the morning before we finished the trip. The restaurant out in front is supposed to be very good too (my parents always ate there). The only cons, its a little more expensive and the one time we stayed there, the mattresses in our room were horrible. But the battleship and the SR-71 are cool:

We also make the trip a dozen times a year. We usually stop in Daphne, Ala. and stay at the Hilton Garden Inn. Very clean and very safe. Have a safe trip!

Stop in Pensacola. You can even make a quick beach trip. Anywhere in the Cola is safe.

Wife and I just did this trip last year. We stayed in the Red Roof Inn in Pensacola. Very affordable and safe.

Have a good one.

I wanted to add... watch your speed on I-10 in Louisiana and Florida. We made this drive a few weeks ago and the cops were out in force, round trip. In LA the cops were out at night pulling people over left and right. They'd come up behind you and clock your speed, then pull you over before you even knew what happened (witnessed of course, clean record here).

Just slap on an adult diaper and call yourself Lisa.

Seriously, LOL, I have made that drive many, many times. I usually stop in Pcola unless I'm heading further south to Ft Myers or Miami, then I stop in Crestview.

yeah, we've made this drive many times but to South Florida instead of just Orlando. It's about 21 hours from Killeen to Miami so take away three hours and it's 18 hours from Houston to Miami. 12 hours to the Florida-Alabama border and another 9 from the border to Miami. Basically, LONG DRIVE.

Stop in Pensacola no matter what if it's night. Do not drive across the panhandle during that time. First off, it's boring (but it's boring during the day too. The only thing to keep you entertained is counting the trees). Interstate 10 in Florida has got to be the worse drive in all of the South. Pensacola has some nice hotels, has an underrated beach, and is not far from Mobile. It's about 5 hours to Orlando from Pensacola.

Usually, when we are by ourselves, we drive the entire way. But when we was little, we made it all the way to Tallahassee. Then got a hotel and continued on.
