Hi everyone,

I'm new to Houston and it looks like I'll be commuting from Jersey Village to Lamar Terrace or Great Uptown. Mapquest suggests me to take 290 then I-610 S but I read a lot of bad things about 290 traffic. How about taking 290 then W beltway 8 south bound? Will this work? I've never been to Houston and am just following the map. should I completely avoid 290? What do you suggest?

Thanks for your help in advance!
BK

Traffic is bad all over Houston and that includes the beltway. It's probably best you just take 290 to 610. The beltway has a little less traffic but it's a longer drive and you would probably get to your destination at the same time anyway. I used to live in Cypress and commute Uptown. It took me 40 minutes to get to work in the morning and an hour to get home at night taking 290. I made the move to Uptown and now it takes me 5 minutest to get to work. I still drive out to Cypress from time to time to see my parents after I get off work and I've tried taking I-10 because people talk about how great it is now that it has widened it's lanes but traffic still gets bad approaching the beltway and I end up at my parent's house around the same time I would have if I just had taken 290.

Jersey Village requires one toll on the way to I-10. After you hit I-10, it's less than 10 minutes to Chimney Rock and up. Avoid 290, that's all I can say.

sure. I can make it from kirkwood and I-10 to Shepard and W Grey, or Bagby, in 15-20 minutes. I exit Silber and go through the park. I-10 is breeze these days.

edit: I can even do Uptown in 23-25 crawling down Memorial to Briar Forest to San Felipe to Post Oak during rush.
