I've only lived in Maplewood a few months, so I'm not seeing too many negatives yet. In my view:

BEST:
Old-fashioned, quiet family neighborhood
friendly neighbors
affordable
good elementary schools
houses and yards are very well-maintained so nabe is attractive
can use bayou trail for running, walking, biking, and commuting by bike

WORST:
Lack of restaurants/cafes in immediate neighborhood. However, Galleria and Hillcroft/Richmond area are very close, with lots of good places to eat.

I hear the crime has been curbed. I have seen quite a few cops patrolling the neighborhoods. I am near Willowbend.

I think it will be hard to show how much of a crime increase is symbolic of our economy, and how much is a genuine trend. When I lived in both Parkwest and Willow Meadows (late 90s to early 2000s), crime other than random thefts from open garages, was nowhere on our radar. The are has only gotten better since then.

The worst part about Meyerland is the false advertising. Jews? Where? I'd KILL for a good deli, dammit.

At least we've got a good bagel. NY Bagels on Hillcroft. Add that to the "best" column.

It's not kosher, but this is where you want to go:

Kenny & Ziggy's Deli - Houston
