Hotel Alessandra - Another tower for downtown. Work begins in June, the design is amazing.

An express elevator that whooshes guests to a 25th-floor lobby with skyline views during check-in.

A sleek, glass exterior that extends over a rooftop pool and bar.

Room rates that soar among the highest in Houston.

These are a few of the flourishes planned for the Hotel Alessandra, the latest lodging project announced for the eastern side of Houston's downtown ahead of the Super Bowl's return in 2017.

"Looking at downtown, we really felt we needed to differentiate ourselves from hotels that already exist and the ones on the way," Jamie Bryant, executive vice president of Midway, the company that will own the Alessandra, said Tuesday.

The 225-room hotel will be built in the GreenStreet retail-office cluster formerly known as the Houston Pavilions. It will be adjacent to the Forever 21 clothing store, on a block bounded by Main, Dallas, Polk and Fannin.

Looks great! They're doing a lot of construction right now to GreenStreet with most of it blocked off right now. I would love to see more retail and restaurants to get foot traffic to come that way.

Seeing how Houston Pavillions errr Green steet has pretty much been a failure so far, I'd be suprised if this new hotel even gets off the ground.

Awesome! Should put a pool of shoppers right in their midst! Let's hope this'll help them put together a shopping district like they were proposing.

Not negative, I hope it does will, but I've seen a lot of businesses fail in that area. Scott Gertners, Yao's restaurant, Books-A-Million. The books-a-million is still sitting empty.

They're building it for the Super Bowl, so there's a high probably they'll build it as fast as possible in order to cash in. Apparently they're going all out and charging much, much more than the average room rates in the area, so they must be feeling very bullish on the amount of business that the Super Bowl will bring.

That would make more sense if the same group that owned the Pavilions still owned it, and made such an announcement.

I think it looks good. Just 4 more blocks of parking lots between Greenstreet and Discovery Green to develop and everything will finally be connected from GRB to City Hall.

The problem with the Pavilions and GreenStreet, downtown overall, is they need to figure out a way to get people there in the evenings and on the weekends. Have something that actually makes it worth driving back into downtown for. Sure there are people that live there and they can frequent these shops and restaurants but it's just not enough. I think a hotel at GreenStreet is a great idea. Guest will come in, stay there, and give business to the restaurants and retail in that area since it will be walking distance. Another issue with this location is that it is somewhat "far" from some of the bigger buildings downtown. So many people go straight to the tunnels for lunch for convenience and not have to deal with the weather, cars, homeless etc. But hopefully with this hotel, the guests staying there can give a lot of business to the retail and restaurants that I am sure will come.
