Hi All,

I'm from the Pac NW and am coming down this Friday for a few days to check the area out as we plan on relocating (yea, can't wait to get away from the rain and outragous real estate...but that's another topic!). Never really cared for Mexican food until I had real Tex Mex while on a business trip in Dallas and Houston! I had the best Carne Asada in my life in Dallas while there at a place called Uncle Julios (I think that's what it was called)...never had a chance to eat Mexican while I was in Houston.

Where is the best place in Houston? I'm staying on the north side (by Spring), but don't care where it is as long as it's the best! Also, I'll be in San Antonio and Austin on Monday...do you have any suggestions in those cities as well?

Thanks!

Houston: Must go to Cyclone Anaya's (there is one in midtown, one in river oaks and one west of downtown off Shepherd and I10 or Cafe Adobe as a backup. Taco Milagro is also great but more fast food style.

Austin: Trudy's first or Matt's El Rancho as a backup. Baby A's for the margaritas.

San Antonio: Paloma Blanca on Broadway in Alamo Heights, La Fogata as backup

Irma's downtown has a good reputation but I haven't been so I can't vouch for it. The original Ninfa's on Navigation is good, but none of the other locations. El Tiempo on Washington is pricey but also up there. For fajitas El Jardin on Harrisburg is a must. A lot of people really like Pappasitos but I like a little more, I don't know, authentic or something.

Here is a link on a write up for El Jardin

Had lunch at Irma's today and the food, service, and atmosphere are unbeatable. Irma was sitting at the next table talking to a couple of politicos

She goes to the farmer's market every day to buy her ingredients.

Taqueria Del Sol, I-45 @ Broadway. Don't forget to stop by the bakery next door.

Original Ninfa's on Navigation gets an honorable mention.

It depends on what you are looking for
• Lupe Tortilla – very good beef fajitas and playground for the kids
• El Tiempo – expensive for Mexican, but great fajita platters and very good margs
• El Patio – known for their margaritas that are too strong for must humans. It is almost bar-like, but the food is actually very good.
• Tony's - very good general tex mex
• Cyclone Anaya's - great happy hour/late night spot
• Escalantes, Pappasitos, Guadalajara – these are/would be top notch in most cities. The food and experience is very good, but Houston has a ton of great options.
• Hole-in-the-wall Mexican joints – some of the best food is found in little mom and pop shops… it just takes some recommendations and/or courage
