Considering taking a job in Houston and buying a one bedroom while keeping my primary home four hours away in Louisiana.

Have found a one bedroom condo in Townhomes on the Park in Sharpstown that I really like. Six miles from my new office.

I understand it's an ethically diverse area - hispanic, asian, african american and white being predominant in the area. I'm your classic White American male professional. Married, no kids.

Google maps show an apartment complex across the street, but the rest of the nearby areas look to be residential neighborhoods.

What's the good, bad and ugly of this particular part of Sharpstown?

FWIW, I'm looking to be there about 15 years.

There are much worse areas than Sharpstown I would not get a townhouse there. Sharpstown is like 50/50 good & bad parts the bad parts are not that bad

don't worry, just stay away from the apartment complexes and you will be good, the neighborhoods are absolutely safe, ive been living here for years and I've never had any trouble, check out the area for yourself and see what you think, the area has a lot of hispanic/asian/white/ and there is a large middle eastern community on demoss due to a mosque nearby, there arent to many black people though

Live in Westchase or Memorial and drive to Sharpstown. It is not that far and will be better all around!

Sharpstown is rough around the edges. With that said, you can get an absolute steal in that area. There are many gorgeous Meyerland type houses for half the price. As somebody above said, stay away from the apartment complexes (which is true in many areas of Houston). I am by no means a real estate expert, however if I had to predict an area that could turn around quickly, it would be Sharpstown. Housing stock is nice, the location is hard to beat for outside 610 and you have the continuously growing new "Asiatown" to the east. A lot of people on this thread will disagree with me. I would give the area a look see.

I appreciate all the honest responses. From what I can see from Google maps (we have yet to get to visit Houston for a condo hunting trip), it appears to have a huge apartment complex across the street from these townhomes.

Based on this and some other advice we've received, we're now looking at places in Westchase that are within 4 miles of the office (which is on San Felipe).

Any other insight would be appreciated. We're looking in the Jeanetta area just off Westheimer now.

I was going down Mary Bates 6 months ago and the houses looked like Memorial except a little yard sprucing and a few touch-ups to the exterior needed to take place.

I think the area will boom (after the economy is sorted out) due to location and layout. The SW freeway provides really great access in this area and Sharpstown proper is already laid out between residential and commercial--it's just a matter of attracting new commerce to build and rehabilitate buildings---and maybe a little modernization by the re-developer such as removing houses that front on major streets such as Bellaire and Beechnut and turn them into the buffer zones like the winding tree-lined sidewalks I see here in Cinco Ranch.

The Royal Oaks area should be pretty stable and safe. A lot of nicer people shop at HEB there

Hey, thanks for the recommendation of the Royal Oaks area. I figured out where it is and have found a few places that seem nice and that are in my price range (since this is going to be a second place.)

I think I'm going to concentrate there, and in the Jeanetta area near the Galleria since they are both so close to my future employer.
