Hey, weird question, but I always wondered what its like for cops at night patrolling the streets. What stuff they usually do, etc. I bet it gets kind of boring at night driving around alone. A some of the cops around my area I've met are actually pretty cool people.

So.. is it possible for someone to drive around with a cop for a hour or so? I only ask because my older sister did an intern a couple years back at Baylor, and she did something like this, but I don't know if it's a special case for her. Ever heard of someone doing something like that?

Every police department is different, but in Houston there are several ways. The best way is to know or be related to an officer who can then go about getting official permission for you to ride along with him or her. The citizen's police academy includes a ride along, as do some other programs like Grand Juror orientation. If you're interested in a police career you can also talk to an officer assigned to recruiting.

You can do it in Pearland. You have to sign a waiver before they will let you, though. They have the forms there at the police station.

yes you can request a ride along with HPD. this will take a little bit of time as they have to do a full background check on you before you can go. there are some papers to fill out, stuff like you can not be a member of the media in any way, and that your not going to sue hpd if you get poked with an aids infested needle by some junkie or what not. you know the standard stuff.

my brother was going to join HPD and one of my friends is an instructor for them so we went through part of the process.
