I was wondering if there is some where in the Houston area that sells scraps and what not from old houses or what not. I keep seeing on peoples blogs places like LA and Seattle all have a huge place that you can go and find old windows, doors, lockers, and just stuff. I would love to find something like that here if it exists.

Historic Houston off of Waugh/Clay is a great source. We donated our old concrete asbestos shingles after Ike, and bought a new (to us) front door removed from a similar 30's era house. A perfect fit! Adkins Architectural Antiques in Midtown is another good source, but they can be pricey. We bought replacement crystal door knobs and plates from them, but it got expensive fast.

I think we're too close to Mexico to have a salvage yard.

Habitat for Humanity is a place that has that. Not exactly sure where in Houston it is, but when we last visited we went to it to look for old doors...etc Has some pretty good items there. I am someone familiar with Houston would know the actual location.

yah. ever heard of doors, windows, AC, bricks, yard toys etc getting stolen around here?

actually if you watch craigslist you will see some people selling used house items, some are renovating, some just dismantling their house to get back at banks before being forced out (foreclosure)

I had somebody else mention that to me. I had never heard of Habitat having a place. I would love to know where.
