The only time I did it was in college at my apartment I found a lone computer sitting there with nothing else around it. Stripped it for parts and made $50 worth of beer money off eBay.

Otherwise, rummaging through a full dumpster is about as sanitary
as doing this.

I once heard of someone who went dumpster diving in the dumpsters of video rental places - apparently little trash and they threw out old rentals that had a scratch, etc. that couldn't be sold. I can't even remember who told me that because it has been so many years ago. I just remember someone saying that they did that.

Gee, that looks like fun!

Most of the dumpster divers I see are homeless people usually gathering cans and other metals for recycling.

When I lived in Midtown at the AMLI Midtown, people would often leave some pretty nice furniture, paintings, stereo equipment, etc...in the parking garage near the dumpster upon move out. Leather couches in good condition, Armoirs, etc.

I do. Christmas light are the best! with a little work, they really add up when sold for the copper and people throw em out by the dozens. Also cords and copper from old motors. My neighbors make about $600.00 every 3 rd month off the metal recycling alone. I'm not quite that dedicated and don't have all the spare time. Other finds are a bonus. BTW, all this is just from folk's everyday garbage and from heavy trash pick-up days. Make lotsa other nice finds. Actually got a near complete set of real silver (not plated). With this, I actually went to the owner and asked if this is what they intended, they said yes so it was mine.
Rule #1 - do not take anything from an actual recycling bin
Rule #2 - be polite and leave things as neat as you found them or better
Rule #3 - stay away from commercial dumpsters unless you have permission.

Well sort of. If I see something sitting outside & I need it or know someone who needs it I will pick it up. So far in the past 3 yrs I have found a metal black great futon. Looked new. Slightly used 5 tier shelves, entertainment ctr, a goreous redwood table, a few nice looking, working t.v.s, a slightly use black leAther sofa, a treadmill, a stepper, 2 vaccums, new in box life vest for children & new in box pool, new in box floaty for babies. Plants, Plastic plants, fish tanks & lamps. So this is what I have been blessed to find. Things like this are ok. And they were ALL sitting next to the dumpster. I would not go in one but sitting on the outside ok.

I can see where this thread will be heading and it won't be informative. The members will have a "hay day" with this. I doubt anything worthwhile will come out of it just because of the subject matter.
