Believe me, guns are likely the last reason I'm considering Houston :P

The culture, climate, location of a decent school if I DO continue my education to the masters level, cheap housing, low unemployment, many bedroom communities and high growth, among other things are on the list. Houston looks to have it all

Default Looking for Germans in Texas?

Hi, as far as Germans in Texas. I am-an American but a native German and not necessarily happily located in California. I have been searching for a nice place to retire where I will be able to and have been searching for a good place to retire and will be able to afford retirement. Through my research I have found that meetup groups is a very convenient website. There is a big German Expat Meetup Group to be found in San Antonio. Never looked for Houston, because I never considered going there. I think Austin has one too. Check it out. [mod edit 10 post to link off site].
Good luck in Texas.

Default My vote is Houston!

I lived in San Antonio for just about all of my 20's and recently moved to Houston. I also graduated from UTSA in SA.
Hands down I feel like Houston is a more friendly city and much easier to settle into with a lot more stuff to do. You can only visit the riverwalk and Seaworld so many times. There is also a lot more industry and more job opportunities.
Traffic wise SA is particularly awful on 281 and the North parts of 1604. And the commute in from Boerne is pretty congested too.
There are some German restaurants/attractions downtown SA and of course in Fredricksburg and New Braunsfels but I don't think that there's any real overall feeling of German culture in SA.
Houston is much more diverse overall.
My advice would be to move to Houston but take your wife on some weekend trips to Wursfest in New Braunsfels and to some of the charming B&B's and resEaurants in Fredricksburg and Gruene (New Braunsfels).
Feel free to pm me if you have any questions on specific areas in SA.
Good luck!
